Woodford Reserve Distillery Announces This Weekend’s Curbside Release of Five Wood Whiskey

Woodford Five Wood Whiskey. Woodford Reserve.

The Woodford Reserve Distillery Series has introduced Five Wood Whiskey, an all-new expression arriving this weekend.

The new release features Woodford’s standard bourbon aged first in oak barrels, then finished in four different casks that once held Oloroso Sherry, Amontillado Sherry, Ruby port, and Tawny port, before being blended at bottled at the distillery’s standard 90.4 proof.

“This is the first time in Woodford Reserve’s history that we’ve blended whiskeys that have been finished in five different barrels,” Master Distiller Chris Morris said in a press release today. “The result is a rich taste and a bright finish.”

Tasting notes from the distillery describe Woodford Five Wood as having a nose with “an intense medley of rich blackberry, dark cherry, dates, raisin, prune and red fruit reduction notes sweetened with Demerara sugar and caramel-coated walnuts. Dark leather, oak and black licorice spice develop slowly.” On the palate, we’re told to expect “rich dark chocolate and espresso coffee caramel icing coated with a raspberry and cherry reduction,” and a finish that’s “long, mouthwatering rich red fruit brightened with a drop of orange oil.”

The Distillery Series highlights small batch, experimental releases for available exclusively for guests of the Versailles, KY property. Each year the distillery offers three expressions, beginning 2020 with the popular Double Double Oaked. Expressions from previous years have included Woodford Bottled-in-Bond, Blended Rye, Five Malt, and more.

Although the gift shop and distillery are still closed to guests, fans will be able to shop for their bottles online and pick up curbside between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. every Friday afternoon. In addition to the new Five Wood Whiskey, the distillery will be offering their flagship expressions (Bourbon, Double Oaked, Rye, Malt, and Wheat) as well as the remainder of their 2020 Derby Bottles. The distillery plans to have a new curated selection available each week.

Woodford Reserve Five Wood Whiskey will be available in 375 ml bottles beginning this Friday, June 26th, for around $50. Link here to shop.
