Mess with some liquids from Texas this weekend and celebrate Texas Independence Day with the perfect bourbon cocktail: The Flintlock.
March 2 marks the anniversary of the signing of Texas’s Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836. The Flintlock, named after a model of gun used during the Texas Revolution, was created to celebrate Texas Independence Day by Caer Ferguson, Bar Manager at The Eleanor in Austin, Texas (the drink is being served at the adjacent Roosevelt, where she also bartends).
“Lightly inspired by a French 75,” she explains, “this cocktail uses a Texas-made beer and bourbon with Texas-grown grapefruits.”
The cocktail combines citrus, bourbon, syrup and IPA in a bold, bright, and slightly fruity balance of flavors that seems just right for a little celebration (the sparkler also helps).
1 1/2 oz Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon
3/4 oz Lemon
3/4 oz Grapefruit Oleo and Pink Peppercorn Syrup (Take 1 cup of sugar and the peels of three grapefruits, let sit for 12 hours. After add 1 cup of warm water and strain. Blend with 2 teaspoons pink peppercorns for 30 seconds. Strain again.)
Shake and strain into a footed collins glass with cracked ice cubes. Top with Lone Pint’s Yellow Rose IPA (Editor’s Note: we’d suggest that you focus on the citrus hop note of the beer’s flavor if you’re looking for a substitution).
Garnish with a grapefruit wheel with a sparkler skewered through and a metal straw.
