MGP has announced Remus Repeal Reserve Series III, the third release in their annual line showcasing a blend of high-rye, well-aged bourbons.

Remus Repeal Reserve Series III is a blend of three bourbons distilled in 2007 and 2008 with two different high rye mash bills. The full recipe of the 100 proof bourbon is as follows.

  • 12% Bourbon distilled in 2007 with a 21% rye mash bill
  • 78% Bourbon distilled in 2008 with a 21% rye mash bill
  • 10% Bourbon distilled in 2008 with a 36% rye mash bill

Tasting notes from the distillery describe a complex nose with “caramel, candied fruit, chocolate, baking spice, smoke and leather” and a “balanced palate of caramelized brown spice and a hint of rye on the finish.”

“We’re privileged to have some of the country’s most extensive, aged Bourbons, and are continuing to build our limited release program every year,” said Andrew Mansinne, Vice President of Brands, MGP, in a press release. “Remus Repeal Reserve is now in its third year and delivers a bold, high-rye profile that weaves the best of our 2007/2008 Bourbons into a beautifully smooth style.”

Each year, the Lawrenceburg, Indiana distillery releases their Remus Repeal Series on November 13th, the birthday of famed bootlegger George Remus. Remus was a Cincinnati-based pharmacist and lawyer during Prohibition. He made his fortune selling legally purchased “medicinal” whiskey from his pharmacies on the black market, and spread his wealth with lavish parties thrown for hundreds of well-heeled guests. One attendee, author F. Scott Fitzgerald, was so inspired by the larger-than-life Remus that he used him as the basis for the title character of his great American novel The Great Gatsby.

MGP also recently announced Remus Volstead Reserve, a 14-year-old bottled-in-bond bourbon hitting shelves this December. The release coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the onset of Prohibition following the passage of the Volstead Act.

Remus Repeal Reserve Series III will be hitting shelves in November at a suggested retail price of around $85.
