Maker’s Mark dipped their toes in the direct-to-consumer “booze by mail” waters earlier this year with the launch of “The Whisky Drop” program. Essentially, you sign up and have the option every few months to receive specialty releases mailed to your front door, two bottles per mailing cycle. Former mail-outs have included rarities like the limited-release Private Selection expressions using Roasted French Mocha and rich Mendiant finishing staves. Members also receive extras like tasting notes, recipes, and exclusive Star Hill Farm experiences.
After a successful launch, the program is now expanding its membership enrollment in the Kentucky and Washington D.C. markets. For now, it’s ONLY AVAILABLE in the KY and D.C. markets.
Rob Samuels (COO and 8th gen ‘whisky maker’) noted, “We started this program to share some of our most innovative and hard-to-find whisky directly with friends and fans who savor it as much as we do. We started small to make sure we could deliver a great experience to our members. We’ve been blown away by their response, and we’re happy now to expand it, although we’re doing it slowly since we only have a limited quantity available of these unique Maker’s Mark expressions.”
Upcoming September Release: Limited Edition
The upcoming September mail-out will feature both of the brand’s 2021 Wood Finishing Series limited releases – FAE-01 (Learn More) and FAE-02. While FAE-01 debuted earlier this year, FAE-02 has not yet been released to store shelves giving The Whisky Drop members a first taste of the distillery’s latest limited release. The Wood Finishing Series is proprietary to Maker’s Mark and involves inserting oak staves into barrels of fully matured Maker’s Mark® for several additional weeks to amplify and celebrate different flavor profiles found in classic Maker’s Mark.
Mailing booze (legally) for Kentucky Distillers is a recent thing as new legislation, HB 415, kicked in this year allowing distillers to mail directly to consumers where permitted.
