Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced the 13th release of Stagg Jr., arriving at retailers soon.
Like previous expressions of the Stagg Jr. line, the 13th will be eight years old and bottled at barrel strength – in this case, 128.4 proof. Tasting notes provided by the distillery describe “a nose with loads of dark cherries, followed by honey.” On the palate, we’re told to look for “flavors of cream caramel mocha followed by cherries, giving it a full-bodied mouthfeel,” with “a long finish of toasted oak, dark chocolate, and cinnamon.”
The Stagg Jr. line was first launched in 2013, with the distillery releasing two bottlings each year. We’re told we can expect the second release for 2020 in late spring or early summer.
George T. Stagg, the “big brother” in the uncut and unfiltered family, is released just once a year as a member of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. While it has topped 140 proof in the past, the 2019 release was its lowest yet at 116.9.
The bourbon is named for one of the distillery’s best-known craftsman, George T. Stagg himself. After he took over the O.F.C. Distillery (one of the earliest names for what is now Buffalo Trace), it was rechristened as the George T. Stagg Distillery in 1904.
