The cheeky marsupial broke into a shop in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and proceeded to get hammered on Bourbon whiskey.

You might think that would be lethal for a small animal, but the opossum was able to handle the booze. It sobered up at Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge and has now been released unharmed.

Posting the above photo of the animal on Facebook, the refuge said: ‘On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: a drunk opossum in a box! This sly, and currently slurred, opossum snuck its way into a liquor store and discovered some holiday cheer of its own. A police officer brought the animal to us for medical treatment and is expected to be released soon.’

The animal had been found next to a broken and empty bottle of bourbon. Michelle Pettis, a technician at the refuge, told the Panama City News Herald that the female opossum seemed disorientated, was excessively salivating and was pale. She said: ‘We loaded her up with fluids to help flush out any alcohol toxins. She was good a couple of days later.’

Store owner Cash Moore added: ‘She came in from the outside and was up in the rafters, and when she came through she knocked a bottle of liquor off the shelf. When she got down on the floor she drank the whole damn bottle.’
