The Horse and Barrel is a bar affiliated with and located next door to deSha’s restaurant at the corner of Main Street and Broadway in downtown Lexington. This British-style pub is a must-visit for bourbon enthusiasts, offering over 70 different selections.
“We strive to offer a wide variety of bourbons,” special events coordinator Tony Atwood explains. “If you’re new to bourbon we have a menu that offers a number of introductory and mid-range choices. For the more experienced drinker we offer higher-end choices that include the highly-acclaimed Pappy Van Winkle line.”
Recently named an Icon of Whisky by the prestigious European-based Whisky Magazine, the Horse and Barrel offers its customers the opportunity to become a part of the establishment’s lore.
“We have what we call the Bluegrass Bourbon Club,” Tony explains. “What we have found is that it’s a great way to teach our customers about bourbon. And once you have completed a tasting of each of the 53 different bourbons on the list you get your name put on a plaque.”
Currently membership in this “well-educated club” totals just under 300.

“Our main bartenders Crystal and Jill do a really great job with our signature bourbon drinks,” Tony says, “whether that be one of our wide variety of Manhattans or the very popular Kentucky Margarita.”
