Al’s Bar is located a short distance from downtown Lexington at the corner of North Limestone and Sixth Street. The current management team took over the facility three years ago and has ever since placed a heavy emphasis on supporting Kentucky products and the people that produce them.
“Our focus is on local food, local drink and local music,” co-owner Josh Miller explains. “We have a full menu that relies heavily on local ingredients.”
That same philosophy carries over to the selection of spirits behind the bar.
Josh adds, “The first thing we did when we took the space over three years ago was to start adding bourbons. We now have close to 30 different labels of bourbons and Kentucky whiskeys.”
A self-titled bourbon enthusiast, Josh wants to ensure that his customers get to enjoy a wide range of choices.
“We want to sell a high quality product at a low price. Most of our bourbons are priced at $6.50 and below, but we have a couple higher end choices as well” Josh explains. “In bourbon country you should have a variety of options that you can enjoy that don’t break your bank.”
The house specialty is the Kentucky Cocktail. It is the bourbon of your choosing mixed with another Kentucky product, Ale 8 One.
Live music and local entertainment is always a special treat at Al’s, with the focus being on diversity.
“We have live music nearly every night starting around 9:30,” Josh explains. We have everything from bluegrass bands to hip hop to punk.”
To that end Al’s is hoping to have a “Bluegrass Brunch” up and running by the middle of September.
“It is going to be $15,” Josh says, “and that’s going to get you a meal, a drink and a good bluegrass band.”
Good food, good drink and good music all under one roof: that’s Al’s Bar.
